The GRPI Project provides a space for dialogue and a platform for policy-making by supporting national and sub-regional inter-institutional capacity building and participatory research at the nexus of policy-making and science. GRPI is working to design model processes for multi-stakeholder, multi-disciplinary and multi-sectoral cooperation (our '3M approach') in the development of law and policy, as they relate to genetic resources for food and agriculture (GRFA).

GRPI’s 3M modus operandi is oriented to support research involving active engagement and commitment from a wide range of stakeholders. In this framework, the national and sub-regional task forces are critically important.

Over its life cycle, the task force in each country or sub-region is engaged in a process of:

Collecting and synthesizing data regarding demand from stakeholders in developing countries for capacity strengthening and research services (i.e. the Demand Analysis, DA).

Identifying gaps between those demands and existing information and training possibilities.

Conducting on-the-ground training, capacity building and research activities with several stakeholders.

Supporting or strengthening mechanisms for a '3M' participation in policy analysis, design and institutional governance.

GRPI is implemented by Bioversity and IDRC. Financial support is provided by The Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, BMZ/GTZ, IDRC, Rockefeller Foundation, CIDA, and Bioversity. National and sub-regional partners are making contributions in kind. An International Steering Committee (ISC) provides strategic and operational guidance for the project.
